We recommend a Dust Mask be used when applying this product as it can rapidly dry nasal and throat passage if inhaled.

Diatomaceous Earth is 100% natural and is mined from the ground. It comprises of the fossilised remains of diatoms ( a type of algae ).

The diatoms have a hard shell made of non-crystalline silica, which does not decompose in the lakes, or sea where diatoms live. Thus over long periods of time large volumes of diatoms are exposed on the surface from dried out lakes. Thousands of tons of this natural product are available worldwide in many countries but not all DE has the same or similar composition. (see DE Differences / Grades on technical page).

Our Diatomaceous earth is a very pure source having a typical silicon dioxide content of 94.75%

(see technical specification ) and is suitable for many uses including feed additive. We dry our product naturally in the sun and it is milled to various grades for different uses.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Our Diatomaceous Earth controls insects by physical means not chemical.

The De is applied where insects live and move and will be picked up on the insect’s exoskeleton by static electricity. The DE through abrasion cuts into the insect’s cuticle and once exposed the insect can no longer retain its moisture and so dies. Unlike chemical pesticides results are not usually instant.

It can be expected that most insects will die from contact with DE within a few days. Also DE can have a very good long term residual effect i.e.; applied to cracks and crevices. Control will be reduced if the DE is exposed to high relative humidity (75% or above) as the diatom shells take in the moisture.

It is good to consider insect life cycles and apply DE effectively to coincide with larval / pupae stages becoming adult and with a thorough application. Long term protection and control of insects can be achieved and because of the “physical means” of control not chemical the insect cannot build up a resistance in future generations.
